Alastair Buchan

Alastair M Buchan is Professor of Stroke Medicine and Head of the Medical Sciences Division, University of Oxford.

As a clinician, he led the Calgary Stroke Program for ten years (1995-2005) during which time he developed a comprehensive approach to stroke treatment and prevention integrating research with education and clinical trials to deliver the highest quality of stroke care. In Oxford since 2005, he has been successful in obtaining funding from the MRC and has set up an Acute Stroke Programme and a new Acute Vascular Imaging Centre in collaboration with Peter Jezzard and Peter Rothwell. He is the Translational Research Director for the UK Stroke Research Network. In 2006, Buchan successfully led Oxford’s bid for a Biomedical Research Centre and then was appointed its first Director. He also established and chaired the cabinet of the UK Biomedical Research Directors for the other five centres in the country. In April 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) and in 2008 he took up the post of Head of the Medical Sciences Division.
