How we work

GMEC Structure

GMEC combines the significant research capabilities of the partner institutions with a strong focus on collaboration to deliver world-class research and development programmes.

GMEC’s combination of healthcare capability and medical innovation position it as one of the leading global medical clusters.

Since its inception GMEC has successfully fostered and supported projects in a variety of areas of biomedicine, including organ transplantation, biomarker infrastructure and nanotechnology. We are currently scoping out a number of other significant projects.

Proposals

New programme ideas and proposals are submitted by investigating scientists from the founder and partner organisations for consideration by the GMEC Cluster Committee, which meets five or six times a year. Cluster Committee members may also initiate proposals in response to strategic needs. Informal, preliminary discussions of new proposals are welcomed. Either contact GMEC directly or talk to the Cluster Committee representative from your institution.

GMEC projects are designed to combine the capabilities of member organisations. Typically projects involve a core of investigators drawn from the founders and partners. GMEC funding is designed to facilitate and catalyse proposals which will combine the strengths of the founder and partner institutions to deliver cutting edge scientific, clinical or infrastructure projects to create jobs and attract inward investment. Investigators from organisations external to the cluster are not excluded from the projects.

Funding and Collaboration

GMEC is a not-for-profit organisation funded from public and private sources. GMEC welcomes discussions with biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies and medical charities which see potential value in collaborating in, or sponsoring, specific biomedical projects with cluster partners and founders.
